How to Connect Google Sheets to Claude?

Before you start

You'll need a SourcetoMCP account with at least one brand created, a Google account that can open the spreadsheets you want to use, and a Claude account. Custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, though Free accounts are limited to one at a time.

Connect Google Sheets to SourcetoMCP

1. 1From your dashboard, go to Connectors → Add a connection.
2. 2Find the Google Sheets card and select Connect.
3. 3Sign in with the Google account that can open the spreadsheets you want. SourcetoMCP asks for Google's drive.file permission, which covers individual files you choose and nothing else in your Drive.
4. 4Select + Choose spreadsheets from Google Drive. This opens Google's own file picker, which runs on Google's side rather than ours.
5. 5Pick one or more spreadsheets and confirm. Each one becomes its own entry on your Connections page.

Run the same flow again later to add more. A spreadsheet you never picked stays invisible to Claude even when it sits in the same folder as one you did, which is the point of the narrower permission.

Add SourcetoMCP as a connector in Claude

Claude adds every custom connector the same way, under Customize then Connectors. These steps are that flow pointed at SourcetoMCP.

1. 1In SourcetoMCP, open Connect an agent from the dashboard sidebar and copy your server address (it looks like https://sourcetomcp.com/api/mcp).
2. 2In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
3. 3Select +, then Add custom connector.
4. 4Paste in your server address. You can leave Advanced settings alone, because SourcetoMCP runs its own OAuth and never needs a client ID or secret from you.
5. 5Click Add.
6. 6The first time Claude uses it, you'll be asked to sign in to SourcetoMCP and approve access, the same OAuth approval you'd see connecting any other app. After that it reconnects on its own.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, only an Owner can add a connector, from Organization settings, then Connectors. Everyone else then opens Customize → Connectors and clicks Connect to sign in with their own SourcetoMCP account, so each person only ever reaches the sources their own account can see.

Ask Claude about your spreadsheets

Adding the connector makes it available, and you still switch it on per conversation. In a chat, select the + button, choose Connectors, and toggle SourcetoMCP on.

Claude can read any range or list the tabs in a spreadsheet, then act on what it finds: appending rows, sorting a range, building a chart, setting a dropdown, or applying a standing formatting rule that keeps working after the conversation ends. Try something like:

1. 1Read the Q3 tab and tell me which regions missed target.
2. 2Append this week's numbers as a new row on the tracker tab.
3. 3Add a dropdown on column D limited to Open, Won and Lost.
4. 4Build a column chart from the summary range.
5. 5Trim whitespace and remove duplicate rows in the contacts range.

The first is a read. The rest all change the file. Claude shows a panel for each tool call, named in plain English, so you can see which range it touched rather than take the result on faith.

A note on write actions

Sheets is one of the most write-capable connectors here: 27 of its 34 operations change something. Claude can clear a range, delete a tab, remove a chart, or drop a conditional formatting rule, and none of that runs through an undo inside SourcetoMCP, because the change lands in the Google file itself. Google's own version history is the safety net, under File then Version history in the spreadsheet. Read what Claude proposes before approving anything it describes as clearing, deleting or replacing.

Troubleshooting

The spreadsheet isn't in the picker: the picker only lists files the signed-in Google account can already open. If the file lives in a shared drive, get that account access to it in Google Drive first, then reopen the picker.

Claude opens the file but can't find a tab: ask it to list the tabs first. Tab names are matched exactly, so a trailing space or a renamed tab will not resolve.

There is no Connectors option under Customize: on Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds connectors for the whole organisation. Ask an Owner to add it from Organization settings → Connectors, and it will then show up for you to connect.

Claude won't let you add another connector: Free accounts can keep one custom connector at a time. Remove the one you have, or move to Pro or Max.

Revoking access

Each spreadsheet is its own entry on your Connections page, so removing one leaves the rest working. That is usually what you want when a single tracker becomes sensitive part way through a quarter. To cut everything at once, revoke Claude from the Connect an agent page instead.
