Semrush MCP Server for Claude and ChatGPT

Keyword research, competitor domains, backlinks, Traffic Analytics and your own Position Tracking and Site Audit projects, read from your Semrush account by Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP-compatible agent.

Semrush runs its own MCP server too. This one covers the same three APIs, shares a connection with your Search Console, Analytics, Ahrefs and ad accounts, and tells you how many Semrush API units each answer used.

Early access: connecting Semrush is limited to our own accounts while we test it against live Semrush accounts, so a new sign up cannot connect it yet.

Why Semrush data matters for your agent

Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report only on properties you have verified. Semrush covers any domain, so your agent can run the same analysis on a competitor, a client prospect or a site you are thinking of buying.

  • Rivals you never verified. Organic and paid keywords, traffic estimates, backlinks and ad copies for any domain you can name.
  • Your own tracking, readable. Position Tracking and Site Audit projects stay where they are in Semrush, and your agent reads them without anyone exporting a CSV.
  • One connection for the whole picture. Pair a competitor's Semrush estimates with your own Search Console clicks, Analytics sessions and ad spend in a single question.
  • Read-only, by design. All 108 operations only read. Your agent cannot create, edit or delete anything in your Semrush account.

How it works

1

Connect Semrush. Copy your API key from Subscription info, then API units in Semrush and paste it in. One key covers your whole account, so there are no properties to pick.

2

Your agent asks in plain language. It picks the right Semrush report behind the scenes and gets real index data back.

3

Every answer shows its price. Rows come back keyed by the report's own fields, with the number of Semrush API units that query used attached to the result.

Semrush's three APIs, read by your agent

domain overview

Overview of any domain

Estimated organic and paid traffic, keyword counts and Semrush rank for any domain you can name, with the history behind it. You do not have to own the site or verify it first.

organic · paid keywords

The keywords a site ranks and bids on

Organic and paid keywords for a domain, a URL, a subdomain or a subfolder, with position, search volume, CPC and the page that ranks. Ad copies and their history come back too.

competitors

Competitors, found for you

Which domains compete for the same organic or paid keywords, how many they share, and who gained or lost the most. Semrush picks the competitor set from its index, so you do not have to name one.

keyword difficulty

Keyword research with difficulty

Volume, CPC and competition for any keyword, plus related terms, broad match variants, question keywords and a difficulty score, in any database Semrush supports.

backlinks

Backlinks and referring domains

Inbound links with anchor text, referring domains, referring IPs, indexed pages, authority score profiles and side by side comparisons of up to several targets.

traffic analytics

Traffic Analytics for rival sites

Visits, daily and weekly traffic, sources, destinations, top pages and audience breakdowns by age, income and interest for other sites. This part needs a Semrush Trends API plan.

projects

Your own Position Tracking and Site Audit

Read the projects already set up in your account: tracked keyword positions, visibility, landing pages, competitors, and Site Audit snapshots, issues and pages. It cannot create or change a project.

api units

Every answer shows its price

Semrush charges API units from your own balance. Each answer reports how many it used, reports default to 25 rows, a daily budget is checked before each call, and your remaining balance is free to look up.

How this compares with Semrush's own MCP server

Semrush hosts its own MCP server and lists it as an official app in Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It reads the same data. If Semrush is the only source you need and you want one click sign in from the Claude or ChatGPT directory, Semrush's own server is the simpler route. This one is for teams that want Semrush on the same connection as their other accounts, with the cost of each answer in view.

Semrush MCP FAQ

Common questions from teams connecting Semrush to an agent.

Keyword research, domain, URL, subdomain and subfolder overviews, organic and paid keywords, competitors, ad copies, backlinks, referring domains, Traffic Analytics, and read-only access to your Projects, Position Tracking and Site Audit data. That is 108 registered operations: 46 for the SEO reports, 15 for backlinks, 21 for Traffic Analytics, 24 for projects, and 2 free ones for your balance.

Yes. Semrush runs a hosted MCP server and lists it as an official app in Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It covers the same three APIs and is read-only. SourcetoMCP covers the same ground and adds one connection shared with your Search Console, Analytics, Ahrefs, ad and commerce accounts, plus the units each answer used. The comparison table above sets them side by side and links Semrush's own pages.

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Claude Code, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client. Connect once from your dashboard's "Connect an agent" page and every tool you have paired can use it.

Yes. This connector uses an API key from your own Semrush account, so you need a plan with API access. Semrush's MCP page lists Semrush One Starter, One Pro+, SEO Classic Pro and SEO Classic Guru, which include 50,000 API units a month, and says SEO Classic Business or One Advanced need an API units package. Traffic Analytics needs a Trends API plan. Semrush can change its plans at any time. SourcetoMCP does not resell Semrush data.

It uses the same API units as any other Semrush API call, taken from your own balance, with no SourcetoMCP markup. Semrush's price list charges per line returned: a domain overview line is 10 units, a related keywords line is 40, and a Site Audit snapshot is 10,000. Asking for a past month costs five times as much on many reports. Every answer reports what it used.

Reports return 25 rows unless you ask for more, and each report has a hard row cap. A daily unit budget is checked against the worst case of a request before it runs, and a request that would cross it is refused. Your agent can also read your remaining balance for free before a large pull.

No. All 108 operations are read-only. The Projects reads retrieve data and cannot create projects or change settings.

No. You paste an API key from your own account (Subscription info, then API units), never your password. Disconnect it any time from Connectors.

One Semrush API key counts as a single connection, however many domains you go on to analyse with it. See Pricing for how many connections each plan includes.
