Pinterest analytics helps you understand how people see, save and interact with your content. Finding the Pins and ads worth scaling means connecting those interactions to the result you want: website visits, qualified enquiries or purchases.
A Pin with a large impression count can deserve a different next step from a campaign producing checkouts at an acceptable cost. Define the outcome first, then choose the numbers you will use to judge it.
With SourcetoMCP's Pinterest connector, an AI assistant can retrieve individual Pin metrics, compare paid campaign and ad performance, and review campaign-level checkout value and ROAS. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT to prepare a shortlist of content and campaigns for further testing using your connected data.
1. Read the Pinterest metrics that match your goal
To access Pinterest Analytics, use a Pinterest business account and open Analytics, then Overview. Select a reporting period and review the content type before comparing results. Pinterest's Analytics guide.
These four metrics provide a starting point:
| Metric | What it measures | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | How often a Pin appeared on screen | Whether the content is getting exposure |
| Saves | How often people saved a Pin to a board | Which ideas people want to keep |
| Pin clicks | Clicks or taps on the Pin | Whether people interact with the content |
| Outbound clicks | Clicks that take people off Pinterest | Which Pins send people towards your website |
Pinterest defines these metrics in its Pin stats documentation.
For a website-traffic goal, look at outbound clicks alongside impressions. For a sales goal, add checkout counts, attributed checkout value and advertising spend. Saves help identify content to investigate, but they do not establish that someone purchased.
Use these calculations for a consistently scoped Pin report:
Save rate = saves / impressions × 100
Outbound click rate = outbound clicks / impressions × 100Keep Pin clicks and outbound clicks in separate columns. If a report shows 500 Pin clicks and 120 outbound clicks, the off-platform click count is 120.
2. Find organic Pins worth testing more widely
In the native Analytics interface, select Organic as the content type and review your top Pins using outbound clicks and saves. Review paid results separately. Pinterest's Paid and earned category includes promoted content and downstream activity from it. Pinterest's content-type filters.
Compare Pins over the same period and consider their age, offer and destination. Older Pins can continue receiving attention long after publication. Pinterest says engagement can arrive hours, months or years after a Pin is published. Pinterest's distribution guidance.
Here is a hypothetical 28-day comparison:
| Pin | Impressions | Saves | Outbound clicks | Save rate | Outbound click rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 100,000 | 500 | 100 | 0.5% | 0.1% |
| B | 20,000 | 400 | 300 | 2.0% | 1.5% |
| C | 500 | 25 | 20 | 5.0% | 4.0% |
Pin B sends three times as many outbound clicks as Pin A from one-fifth of the impressions. Its outbound click rate is 15 times higher. For a traffic objective, it deserves a closer review of the message, image and destination.
Pin C has the highest rate, calculated from only 20 outbound clicks. Collect more evidence before assuming that its result will hold with a larger audience.
An organic winner provides a candidate for an advertising test. The paid audience, delivery and cost still need to be measured.
Compare these 10 selected Pin IDs over the latest complete 28 days and the preceding 28 days. Retrieve impressions, saves, Pin clicks and outbound clicks for each period. Calculate save rate and outbound click rate where impressions are available and greater than zero. Rank candidates for a website-traffic test using click counts, rates and comparable offers. Flag small samples and missing data. Make no account changes.3. Judge paid campaigns using the conversion you want
For paid Pinterest activity, retrieve spend and performance at campaign, ad-group and ad level. Use the campaign's objective to decide what constitutes a useful result.
A generic conversions total can include actions with different business value. For an online shop, request checkout-specific reporting before describing those conversions as purchases.
Two calculations help assess a sales campaign:
Checkout CPA = advertising spend / attributed checkouts
Checkout ROAS = attributed checkout value / advertising spendROAS measures attributed value relative to advertising cost. It does not subtract product costs, delivery, returns or overheads.
Suppose a business has chosen a checkout CPA ceiling of $40 and a ROAS target of 3.0. The following figures are hypothetical and use one currency:
| Campaign | Spend | Checkouts | Checkout value | Checkout CPA | Checkout ROAS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $600 | 20 | $2,400 | $30 | 4.0 |
| B | $400 | 10 | $800 | $40 | 2.0 |
| C | $150 | 1 | $120 | $150 | 0.8 |
Campaign A meets both targets and is a candidate for a budget test. Campaign B meets the CPA ceiling but misses the ROAS target. Review its order values and product economics before increasing spend.
Campaign C has one recorded checkout. Check tracking, reporting delay and the destination before making a large budget decision from that result.
With SourcetoMCP, checkout counts, checkout value and checkout ROAS are available through campaign-level conversion reporting. Individual ad reports provide spend, clicks, outbound clicks and a general conversions total. Those ad rows do not provide checkout-specific revenue or ROAS.
Keep campaign purchase results at campaign level. Use ad and Pin IDs to investigate the creatives within a campaign without assigning campaign revenue to individual Pins.
Retrieve campaign performance and checkout-specific conversion reporting for [account] over [dates]. Confirm the billing currency, then match reports by campaign ID at the same reporting scope. Compare checkout CPA and checkout ROAS against my targets of [CPA] and [ROAS]. Retrieve ad-level performance for creative investigation. Keep campaign checkout revenue separate from individual ad results. Report missing data and coverage limits.4. Check attribution before choosing a winner
Pinterest can attribute conversions to prior clicks, views or engagements. Your reporting window affects which conversions are credited. Record the window, reporting dates and conversion definition beside the results.
Pinterest's reporting interface lets you change the conversion window, reporting date basis and source. Match those settings when comparing exports or checking connected results. Pinterest's reporting documentation.
SourcetoMCP's current Pinterest reporting inputs do not let you select those attribution-window settings. If the connected report differs from a customised dashboard view, verify the underlying reporting defaults rather than assuming the two reports have identical settings.
Campaign conversion reporting can return checkout breakdowns attributed to clicks, engagements and views. Keep the combined checkout total separate from these breakdowns and from web-specific checkout counts.
The native Conversion insights page also uses a different scope: it combines organic and paid activity at business-account level. It can differ from ad-account reporting and third-party website analytics. Pinterest's explanation of Conversion insights.
A campaign's attributed ROAS is evidence for investigation. Proving that advertising caused additional sales requires a suitable incrementality test.
5. Check whether your AI report covers the full account
SourcetoMCP's individual Pin analytics tool retrieves period totals for one Pin at a time. Choose the Pin IDs you want to compare, rather than assuming the assistant has a complete account-wide ranking.
Pin and board data belong to the connected Pinterest profile. Paid reporting belongs to the selected ad account. Confirm both identities before linking the results.
The current Pinterest ad-performance report defaults to 100 ads and supports up to 250. It retrieves the newest active or paused ads before sorting the returned performance by spend. A returned shortlist can therefore omit older or archived ads.
Read the coverage warnings. For a larger account, use the native reporting export to check coverage before calling a candidate the account's best performer.
The connected reporting tools also restrict the start date to the preceding 90 days. Save dated report snapshots if you want to retain comparisons beyond that retrieval window. Pinterest's native interface provides longer reporting history.
6. Scale through a measured budget or creative test
Choose one change that follows from the evidence. A promising organic Pin can become a paid creative test. A campaign meeting your business targets can become a budget test after checking conversion maturity and learning status.
For Pinterest Performance+ campaigns, Pinterest recommends gradual budget increases of 20–30% based on performance and waiting for the Learning indicator to disappear before changing ads or budget. This guidance applies to that campaign type. Pinterest's Performance+ guidance.
A hypothetical 20% change from a $100 daily budget to $120 increases the planned daily allocation by $20. Evaluate the extra spend and results after the change, using a review period that accounts for conversion delay.
Record the original budget, changed budget, date, checkout CPA, ROAS and review criteria. A higher budget does not guarantee that the additional spend will produce the same return.
SourcetoMCP supports campaign budget and status updates. Check the campaign's budget configuration in Pinterest before applying a supported update. Create paid creative tests and make ad-level changes in Ads Manager, because this connector does not currently provide ad-management operations.
Prepare one test for the strongest supported candidate. Show the campaign or Pin ID, evidence, original setting, proposed change, budget impact and review date. Check reporting maturity and learning status using the supplied account information. Define the CPA, ROAS or traffic result that would justify continuing. Keep this as a proposal without applying account changes.7. Use a Pinterest analytics tool for repeatable reviews
An AI-assisted review should return the figures behind each recommendation: the reporting period, content or campaign ID, metric, comparison and next action.
Repeat the same definitions each week. Revisit previous candidates after more data arrives, and keep missing values distinct from zero results. There is no universal outbound click rate or ROAS threshold in this workflow. Compare similar content and use targets set from your business's costs and goals.
