Google Ads Setup Guide: Build a Paused Search Campaign With AI

Published October 26, 2026 · Written by Aanart

A Google Ads setup needs more than a campaign name and budget. Start with a measurable outcome, a relevant landing page and a clear market. Then build the campaign, ad groups, keywords and ads in a paused state so you can inspect the complete setup before advertising spend begins.

SourcetoMCP’s Google Ads connector lets your assistant create supported campaign resources and read their saved state. This guide uses a small Search campaign as the example. Account registration, billing, advertiser verification and website tag installation still need their own checks.

Write the campaign brief before creating resources

Specify the offer, final landing-page URL, service area, language, intended conversion and account currency. Check the page on a phone and complete the intended action. A form that fails after an ad click cannot be repaired by adding more keywords.

Decide which conversion action and goal represent success. An enquiry, a qualified lead and a paid order are different outcomes. Use the conversion-tracking audit to review action sources, duplicate measurement and the campaign goals used for bidding.

Use Google’s Search campaign instructions for the platform setup sequence. Connecting an account to SourcetoMCP gives the assistant access to supported operations. It does not open a billing account or complete every step required for that account to advertise.

Choose a budget and strategy with explicit units

Suppose a hypothetical advertiser plans AUD 1,520 for a full month with an unchanged average daily budget. Dividing by 30.4 gives AUD 50 per day. For most campaigns, Google’s normal daily charging limit can reach twice the average daily budget, so AUD 50 is not a hard AUD 50 limit for each day.

Google’s spending-limit guidance describes the daily and monthly rules. Budget changes, partial months and campaign exceptions need their own review. Keep the approved average daily budget, currency and expected monthly exposure in the brief.

Choose bidding from the objective and the conversion data you trust. Manual CPC is the connector’s default when no strategy is supplied. That default is a product behaviour, with no claim that it is the best strategy for every new advertiser. Review the bid-strategy guide before selecting an alternative.

The current project records a live test of the Search plus Manual CPC campaign-creation path. Other bidding paths and several later resource writes were checked against API definitions without a complete live launch demonstration. Review each returned result in your own account.

Build a small structure with every resource identified

Create the campaign first and retain its ID. Add the ad group under that exact campaign, then create the reviewed keywords and responsive search ad under that exact ad group. Request paused explicitly for every resource that supports status, rather than relying on different defaults.

These are separate writes rather than one atomic launch package. If the ad creation fails after the campaign and ad group succeed, report the resources that already exist and keep them paused. Read them before retrying so the next request does not create duplicates.

A successful campaign write does not imply that an ad group, keywords or approved ad exist. Keep a resource checklist with the returned IDs, statuses and any remaining errors.

Check keywords and responsive search-ad copy

Select keywords from the searches your offer can answer. Assign the intended match type to each keyword and review initial negatives separately. A keyword is a targeting input, while a search term is what a person actually searched. Plan to inspect the search-term report after launch.

The connector accepts three to fifteen headlines, each up to thirty characters, and two to four descriptions, each up to ninety characters. Google’s responsive search-ad documentation explains those inputs and how combinations can appear. Every statement should remain accurate when shown with another supplied asset.

Keep prices, location claims and trial terms consistent with the destination. Supplying more headlines does not validate the offer. The current ad operation creates a new ad and can change its status, but it does not rewrite an existing ad’s creative content in place.

Review the final URL, display paths and tracking parameters. The tracking-template guide covers account settings and overrides. Test the resolved destination after redirects before considering the tracking check complete.

Ask AI to propose the setup, then create only the approved resources

Prepare a Search campaign for [account ID] using this approved brief: [offer, URL, conversion goal, market, language, budget and currency]. Make no changes yet. Propose one campaign, its ad groups, keywords with match types, negative keywords and responsive search ads. Show character counts, bidding choice and unsupported settings that need Google Ads. After I approve the exact plan, create only those supported resources with explicit paused statuses. Read before retrying, retain every resource ID and report partial failures. Do not launch.

A useful response gives you a concrete plan to approve. It names the account and explains which settings require an interface check. The current campaign write sets a channel-specific network configuration but does not expose every network, language or advanced targeting option as an input.

Adding a location criterion is separate from choosing the presence-versus-interest option. Follow the location-targeting audit and confirm the full saved configuration in Google Ads.

Complete the launch review in the actual account

Before launch, confirm billing and account eligibility, campaign goals, networks, languages, locations, exclusions, schedule, bidding and budget. Check ad approval, the landing page and a real conversion test. Record who owns each unresolved item.

An active status and a serving status answer different questions. An ad can remain unable to deliver because of an approval, account or configuration issue. Read the campaign inventory and use Google Ads diagnostics for the remaining explanation.

Approve launch separately from creation. Name the resources whose statuses should change and the maximum authorised budget settings. After activation, check delivery and spend, then review actual search terms and outcomes with the weekly optimisation workflow.
