Google Ads Bid Strategies: Choose Using Your Conversion Data
Published October 24, 2026 · Written by Aanart

Choose a Google Ads bid strategy by the outcome you can measure reliably. Click-focused bidding pursues visits, conversion-focused bidding pursues recorded actions, and value-focused bidding uses the values assigned to those actions. A target CPA or ROAS is an optimisation objective, with no guarantee of the result.
Through SourcetoMCP’s Google Ads connector, your assistant can inspect campaign strategy types, portfolio strategies, conversion settings and reported performance. Use that evidence to prepare a decision before changing a target or moving a campaign onto a shared strategy.
Match the strategy to a measurable outcome
Start with the business question. A traffic campaign needs a definition of a useful visit. A lead campaign needs a reliable lead event. A value-based campaign needs credible values that distinguish outcomes. Counting a page view as a valuable lead feeds a different objective into the same bidding system.
| Objective | Strategy to investigate | Evidence needed first |
|---|---|---|
| Visits within a budget | Maximize clicks | Landing-page relevance and visit quality |
| More recorded actions | Maximize conversions | Trusted conversion actions and campaign goals |
| Actions at an average cost objective | Target CPA | Mature conversion counts and a defensible CPA |
| More recorded value | Maximize conversion value | Consistent values and reporting currency |
| Value at a return objective | Target ROAS | Reliable value-to-spend comparisons |
| Search visibility | Target impression share | A visibility objective and cost controls |
Google’s bid-strategy selection guide explains the objective behind each choice. It also documents the 2026 naming transition: interfaces can show Target CPA or Target ROAS where older labels describe a maximise strategy with a target. Record the saved settings alongside the label.
Availability depends on campaign type and Google’s rules. A strategy that fits a Search campaign is not automatically available for every video, Shopping or Demand Gen campaign.
Check the inputs before comparing strategies
Read the campaign inventory to identify strategy type, status, serving status and budget. An active campaign can still have a delivery problem. Then inspect conversion actions and the goals selected for that campaign. The conversion-tracking audit covers duplicate actions and custom-goal exceptions.
Use complete periods and inspect conversion delay. Recent spend can be visible before all resulting conversions arrive. Comparing yesterday’s CPA with a fully matured month overstates what the recent figure tells you.
SourcetoMCP’s portfolio-strategy list returns names, IDs, types and campaign counts. It is not a complete strategy-target report. Where you need current targets or campaign associations beyond that output, ask the assistant to discover supported fields, or inspect Google Ads. An unavailable value should remain unknown.
Compare campaigns with similar offers, conversion definitions and markets. Grouping a low-value newsletter signup with a paid subscription can make the average CPA look attractive while hiding a poorer business outcome.
Calculate CPA and ROAS from the same scope
Suppose a hypothetical campaign spends AUD 4,000 and reports 80 qualified-lead conversions over a complete 28-day period. CPA is 4,000 ÷ 80 = AUD 50. A target of AUD 30 asks for an average cost 40% below that observed CPA. The calculation describes the size of the change, without showing that the campaign can achieve it.
In a separate hypothetical sales campaign, AUD 4,000 spend and AUD 16,000 recorded conversion value produce ROAS of 4, or 400%. That is value divided by ad spend. It is not profit, because product costs, refunds, fees and other expenses are outside that ratio unless your values explicitly account for them.
A shared-strategy target ROAS input in SourcetoMCP uses a plain ratio. A value of 4 means 400%, so entering 400 would request a very different objective. Target CPA uses the account’s currency units. Confirm units before approving a write.
Do not average campaign CPA or ROAS percentages to produce a combined account result. For a consistent set of outcomes, divide summed spend by summed conversions, or summed value by summed spend. Keep currencies separate.
Distinguish inline settings from portfolio strategies
An inline strategy belongs to the campaign. A portfolio strategy is a shared resource that can affect several campaigns. Updating that resource can change the objective for every attached campaign, so the campaign count is a meaningful part of the review.
The current connector supports bidding configuration when creating supported campaign types and supports creating or updating selected portfolio strategies. It can attach or reassign a portfolio strategy on an existing campaign. Its campaign-update operation does not change an existing inline strategy type or its inline target fields.
Use the Google Ads interface for an unsupported inline change. The product limitation does not establish that Google Ads itself prohibits the change. Before a portfolio edit, identify the affected campaigns, the old target, the new target and the expected reporting definition.
Portfolio writes and the broader campaign-bidding paths need validation in your own account. They are not a performance experiment demonstrated by this article. Google can reject a strategy and campaign combination even when its parameters pass local input validation.
Ask AI for a strategy review with explicit limits
Review bidding for [account] and [campaign IDs] without making changes. Read campaign strategy types, budgets, serving status, portfolio strategies and conversion goals. Compare [two complete periods] using spend, conversions and conversion value. State currencies, attribution timing and conversion-delay concerns. Calculate CPA and ROAS from matching totals. Identify missing current targets. Recommend one reviewable test, with the supported tool or manual Google Ads step, affected campaigns, units and a reason to stop the test.
Ask the assistant to distinguish a tracking repair from a bidding test. If the goal definition changes at the same time as the strategy, record both and avoid claiming that any difference proves the new strategy caused the result.
Use search impression share to investigate lost visibility before attributing every spend shortfall to bidding. Budget, rank, eligibility and the available search demand answer different questions.
Review a test after results have matured
Choose the comparison period and primary outcome before the change. Use a suitable Google Ads experiment where available, or document the limits of a before-and-after comparison. Keep the offer, conversion definition and targeting stable where practical.
Record the change date, target, budget, campaign set and conversion-delay allowance. Review qualified outcomes and value alongside spend and volume. A lower CPA with far fewer qualified leads can fail the business objective.
If a result is inconclusive, preserve that conclusion. Do not present a small count difference as proof that one strategy is universally best. Save the reviewed settings and the next decision in the account’s reporting notes.
