How to Connect Shopify to Claude with MCP?

Published October 17, 2026 · Written by Aanart

SourcetoMCP is a hosted Shopify MCP server, so there is nothing to install and no code to write. This is a two-part setup: first link your Shopify store to SourcetoMCP with an app from your Shopify Dev Dashboard, then add SourcetoMCP itself as a custom connector inside Claude. Once both are done, Claude can read your orders, stock and customers and, if you ask it to, make changes like creating a discount code or adjusting inventory. For what the connector covers, see the Shopify MCP server page.

Before you start

You'll need a SourcetoMCP account with at least one brand created, a Shopify store, and permission to create an app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard under the same organisation as the store, plus a Claude account. Custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, though Free accounts are limited to one at a time.

Connect Shopify to SourcetoMCP

  1. 1In the Shopify Dev Dashboard (dev.shopify.com), create an app in the same organisation as your store.
  2. 2Add the access scopes read_orders, read_products, read_customers, read_inventory, read_locations, read_markets and read_reports. Add read_all_orders to see orders older than 60 days. To let Claude change things, add the matching write scopes too, such as write_products, write_orders, write_customers, write_inventory and write_draft_orders, plus a fulfilment scope. Leave them off and the connection stays read only.
  3. 3Release a version of the app, then install it on your store. Copy the client ID and client secret from the app's settings.
  4. 4From your SourcetoMCP dashboard, go to Connectors → Add a connection and find the Shopify card.
  5. 5Enter your your-store.myshopify.com address (your custom domain will not work), choose Dev Dashboard app, and paste the client ID and client secret. SourcetoMCP verifies them against your store.
  6. 6Confirm the store on the next screen. It then appears on your Connections page.

Shopify connects with your app's client ID and secret, so there is no consent screen to approve. If your store already has an older custom app, you can paste that app's Admin API access token instead. Shopify stopped letting merchants create new custom apps of that kind on 1 January 2026, so most stores use the Dev Dashboard route. Client credentials only work when the app and the store belong to the same Shopify organisation.

Add SourcetoMCP as a connector in Claude

  1. 1In SourcetoMCP, open Connect an agent from the dashboard sidebar and copy your server address (it looks like https://sourcetomcp.com/api/mcp).
  2. 2In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
  3. 3Select +, then Add custom connector.
  4. 4Paste in your server address. You can leave Advanced settings alone, because SourcetoMCP runs its own sign-in and Claude needs no client ID or secret.
  5. 5Click Add.
  6. 6The first time Claude uses it, you'll be asked to sign in to SourcetoMCP and approve access, the same OAuth approval you'd see connecting any other app. After that it reconnects on its own.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, only an Owner can add a connector, from Organization settings, then Connectors. Everyone else then opens Customize → Connectors and clicks Connect to sign in with their own SourcetoMCP account, so each person only ever reaches the sources their own account can see.

Once approved, the connection appears under Active connections on the Connect an agent page in SourcetoMCP, so you can see exactly what has access at any time.

Ask Claude about your Shopify store

Adding the connector makes it available, and you still switch it on per conversation. In a chat, select the + button, choose Connectors, and toggle SourcetoMCP on.

Claude shows a panel for each tool call, named in plain English, so you can see which data it pulled and check the numbers came from your store rather than from the model.

With both pieces connected, Claude can search orders, check stock, read customers and sales, and act on what it finds if you ask. Try something like:

  1. 1Which paid orders from the last three days are still unfulfilled?
  2. 2Show sales by day for the last two weeks and point out the weakest day.
  3. 3Which variants have fewer than 10 units left?
  4. 4What has [a customer's email] ordered so far?
  5. 5Create a 15% off code called AUTUMN15 that ends on Sunday.

The first four are read-only reports. The last one changes your store. See the note below on how SourcetoMCP handles those.

How this differs from Shopify's own Claude connector

Shopify offers its own connector for Claude, described on Shopify's help page. When we checked on 17 October 2026, that page said it reads your orders and customers without changing them, creates percentage-off discount codes only, and cannot issue refunds, cancel or capture orders or process returns. SourcetoMCP is a separate hosted server. It also edits orders, creates refunds and returns, creates percentage, fixed amount, buy X get Y and free shipping discounts, and keeps your Shopify store on the same connection as your ad and analytics accounts. The Shopify MCP server page has the full comparison. Check Shopify's page for what its own tool covers today, because it can change.

A note on write actions

Unlike a read-only connector, Shopify through SourcetoMCP can change real things in your store: orders, products, discounts, customers, inventory, gift cards and more. The access scopes you gave your Shopify app decide which of those work at all, and a write the app has no scope for is refused with Shopify's own message naming the missing scope. New products are created as drafts, customers are only emailed when you say so, and deletes and refunds cannot be undone from here. Reads run straight away, while writes and deletes each go through their own tool, so Claude can ask for your approval first. Each operation also has a daily limit of 200 reads or 20 writes and deletes. Worth reading Claude's proposed action before confirming, the same as you would for any assistant with write access to a live store.

Troubleshooting

Shopify rejected that client ID and secret: check the pair, check the app is installed on this store, and check the app and the store are in the same Shopify organisation. Shopify gives the same answer for all three.

A change fails and names a missing scope: your app does not have that access scope. Add it in the Dev Dashboard, release a new version and install it on the store, then ask again.

Orders older than 60 days are missing: Shopify only returns the last 60 days of orders unless the app has the read_all_orders scope. Add it, then release and install the new version.

There is no Connectors option under Customize: on Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds connectors for the whole organisation. Ask an Owner to add it from Organization settings → Connectors, and it will then show up for you to connect.

Claude won't let you add another connector: Free accounts can keep one custom connector at a time. Remove the one you have, or move to Pro or Max.

Claude says it can't find the tool or has no data: check SourcetoMCP is toggled on for that conversation under the + menu. If it is, confirm the connection still shows under Active connections in SourcetoMCP, then remove and re-add it to trigger a fresh approval.

Revoking access

You can disconnect from either side. In SourcetoMCP, remove the store from your Connections page, or revoke Claude's access entirely from the Connect an agent page. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and remove it. On Team and Enterprise an Owner removes it for everyone from Organization settings → Connectors. To cut off SourcetoMCP's access to your store itself, uninstall the app in Shopify.
