How to Connect Shopify to Gemini with MCP?
Published October 17, 2026 · Written by Aanart

SourcetoMCP is a hosted Shopify MCP server, so there is nothing to install and no code to write. This is a two-part setup: first link your Shopify store to SourcetoMCP with an app from your Shopify Dev Dashboard, then add SourcetoMCP itself as a custom app inside Gemini. Once both are done, Gemini can read your orders, stock and customers and, if you ask it to, make changes like creating a discount code or adjusting inventory. For what the connector covers, see the Shopify MCP server page.
Before you start
You'll need a SourcetoMCP account with at least one brand created, a Shopify store, and permission to create an app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard under the same organisation as the store, plus a personal Google account signed in to Gemini. Custom apps in Gemini need a personal Google account (Workspace and school accounts are excluded), and Google also restricts them to accounts 18 and over, located in the US, with the language set to English and Keep Activity turned on.
Connect Shopify to SourcetoMCP
- 1In the Shopify Dev Dashboard (dev.shopify.com), create an app in the same organisation as your store.
- 2Add the read scopes for orders, products, customers, inventory, locations, markets and reports (the exact names are listed in the Shopify setup docs), plus
read_all_ordersfor orders older than 60 days. Add a write scope only for the areas you want Gemini to change. Without one, that area stays read only. - 3Release a version of the app, then install it on your store. Copy the client ID and client secret from the app's settings.
- 4From your SourcetoMCP dashboard, go to
Connectors→Add a connectionand find the Shopify card. - 5Enter your
your-store.myshopify.comaddress (your custom domain will not work), choose Dev Dashboard app, and paste the client ID and client secret. SourcetoMCP verifies them against your store. - 6Confirm the store on the next screen. It then appears on your Connections page.
Client credentials only work when the app and the store belong to the same Shopify organisation, so create the app in the organisation that owns the store. Shopify stopped letting merchants create new custom apps with an access token on 1 January 2026, which is why the Dev Dashboard route is the default.
Add SourcetoMCP as a custom app in Gemini
- 1In SourcetoMCP, open
Connect an agentfrom the dashboard sidebar and copy your server address (it looks likehttps://sourcetomcp.com/api/mcp). - 2In Gemini, open Settings & help, then Connected Apps.
- 3Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app and paste in your server address.
- 4When prompted, approve the Authorization request to access SourcetoMCP.
- 5Start a new chat. Gemini asks for your approval the first time it calls a SourcetoMCP tool, then reconnects on its own after that.
If Add a custom app doesn't appear, it's almost always one of the eligibility restrictions above. Double check the signed-in account is a personal one rather than Workspace or school, 18 or over, located in the US, set to English, with Keep Activity on.
Once approved, the connection appears under Active connections on the Connect an agent page in SourcetoMCP, so you can see exactly what has access at any time.
Ask Gemini about your Shopify store
Once it's added, SourcetoMCP is available to Gemini in any conversation, there is no separate toggle to switch on per chat. Gemini discovers the tools the server exposes and calls them the same way it uses any of its other connected apps.
With both pieces connected, Gemini can look up customers and collections, check stock by location, review draft orders, and add products if you ask. Try something like:
- 1
List my five newest customers and what each of them bought. - 2
Which collections do I have, and which of them have no products? - 3
Show stock by location for every variant under 10 units. - 4
Which draft orders are still open? - 5
Create a draft product for the autumn range with three variants.
The first four are read-only reports. The last one changes your store. See the note below on how SourcetoMCP handles those.
How this differs from Shopify's own Gemini connector
If you only need to look up orders and customers, Shopify's own connector for Gemini does that, as its help page describes. On 17 October 2026 the page said it creates percentage-off discount codes only and cannot refund, cancel or capture an order or process a return. SourcetoMCP is the route when you want those actions, fixed amount, buy X get Y or free shipping discounts, or Shopify beside your Google Ads and Analytics data. See the Shopify MCP server page for the full comparison. Shopify can change its connector, so recheck its page before deciding.
A note on write actions
Gemini can change orders, products, discounts, customers, inventory and gift cards, as far as the scopes on your Shopify app allow. A write without the right scope is refused with a message from Shopify that names it. Products it creates start as drafts, a customer is emailed only when you ask for that, and refunds and deletes are final. Check the change Gemini proposes before you let it run.
Troubleshooting
Shopify rejected that client ID and secret: check the pair, check the app is installed on this store, and check the app and the store are in the same Shopify organisation. Shopify gives the same answer for all three.
A change fails and names a missing scope: your app does not have that access scope. Add it in the Dev Dashboard, release a new version and install it on the store, then ask again.
Orders older than 60 days are missing: Shopify only returns the last 60 days of orders unless the app has the read_all_orders scope. Add it, then release and install the new version.
Add a custom app doesn't show up under Connected Apps: Google limits custom apps to personal Google accounts, age 18 and over, located in the US, language set to English, with Keep Activity turned on. Check each of those before assuming something is broken.
Gemini says it can't find the tool or has no data: check the app still shows as connected under Settings & help → Connected Apps. If it does, confirm the connection still shows under Active connections in SourcetoMCP, then remove and re-add it to trigger a fresh approval.
Revoking access
You can disconnect from either side. In SourcetoMCP, remove the store from your Connections page, or revoke Gemini's access entirely from the Connect an agent page. In Gemini, open Settings & help → Connected Apps and remove it. To cut off SourcetoMCP's access to your store itself, uninstall the app in Shopify.
